A friend recommended me this free to play game to 'cleanse my palette' from Expedition 33, and within 10 minutes of the game, my next 48 hours disappeared.
I actually surprised myself with this one. This game is fully text-based which made me skeptical at first because text-based games weren't exactly good at retaining my attention recently (I attributed to a me problem).
But!
It turns out this wasn't the case, which made me a little glad because now I know it's not a me problem, and also give me hope that games can be immersive without having graphics.
It gives me some hope that it really is not about graphics, especially as a solo developer (although I know having graphics is better but you know...)
The pacing is really good, and I think the mystery fits the game pretty well.
I just wish that the ending is a little more...satisfying...? I'm not really sure how though. Maybe there are too many loose ends? Maybe it felt like we don't really understand how the curse works? Maybe it felt a little anticlimatic?
It does make me think about similar mystery games where I felt satisfied (Orwell, Golden Idol, Obra Dinn, etc) and compare them to this. What is it about those games that made me feel satisfied that this game did not? It's intriguing that I can't really figure it out, and that's rare. Usually, correctly or not, I will have an idea, but this time I don't.
Still, at the end of the day I do think that the game did what it needed to do. If the author decided that they stand by this ending, then I'm all for it.
This feels like a 8/10 game.
I do wish that it's 100% typing though.
